Documents and forms submission

Upon acceptance into the program, students receive an email with a list of items that must be completed with corresponding deadlines. These materials are submitted through the application system. Students should be mindful of the due dates, and submit everything in a timely matter.

Passport

Students must have a passport that is valid for at least three months beyond the end of the JYM program. If students do not have a valid passport that meets these requirements at the time of their acceptance into the program, they should apply for their passport as soon as possible.

Student visa information

If students are U.S. citizens they may enter Germany on the 90-day Schengen tourist visa. They do not need to apply ahead of time for their visa and will need to submit only the Application for Residency Permit which is one of the forms outlined in the Next Steps email they receive.

Depending on the country of citizenship, students who are not U.S. citizens may need to apply for their student visa before they arrive in Munich. International students should work with the Detroit Office which will provide them the necessary documents to apply for the visa.

Pre-departure online course

Students will be enrolled in an online pre-departure course on Canvas and will have several weeks to review and complete the course materials. The course includes modules on German language preparation, pre-departure preparations and travel logistics, health and safety, academics in Munich, professional development, identity and cultural considerations, and travel/arrival to Munich.

German language prep

Between when you're admitted to the JYM program and the time you actually arrive in Munich (about five to six months) is a great opportunity to strengthen your German language skills.

Brush up on your German

Optional German intensive language course

JYM students have the opportunity to enroll in a one-month intensive German language course organized by the International University Club Munich (IUCM). This course is offered to all incoming international students. JYM students who participate in this course may arrive in Munich early, focus on their German skills, and acclimate to life in Munich before the official start of the JYM Program. This course is not required and has an additional program fee, which includes the course cost, housing, insurance, and a service fee.
